5. Data Ownership

You retain full ownership of all data you enter into Budget iT. Your financial data is encrypted on your device using zero-knowledge encryption before being stored on our servers.

You may export your data at any time in CSV or PDF format. If you delete your account, all associated data, encryption keys, and metadata are permanently and irreversibly deleted.

6. Encryption Disclaimer

Budget iT uses client-side AES-256 encryption with a DEK/KEK key hierarchy. Your data is encrypted before it leaves your device, and we do not have access to your plaintext financial information.

Important: If you lose both your password and recovery key, your encrypted data cannot be recovered by anyone, including us. This is a fundamental property of zero-knowledge encryption, not a limitation we can override.

7. Third-Party Integrations

Budget iT may connect to third-party services at your request, including:

  • Plaid — For bank account connectivity and transaction syncing. Plaid securely connects to your financial institution on your behalf. We access only transaction, balance, and account data you authorize. Plaid's own privacy policy governs their handling of your credentials.
  • Google Drive — For receipt storage and backup. We request only the minimum scopes necessary. Files are uploaded to your own Drive account; we do not access other files.
  • Google Analytics — For anonymous website usage analytics (page views, session duration, device type). No financial data or personally identifiable information is shared with Google Analytics. IP anonymization is enabled. You can opt out using a browser add-on provided by Google.

You may revoke third-party access at any time through the Settings page or the third party's own permission settings. We are not responsible for the availability or data practices of third-party services.

8. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or exploit the Service
  • Interfere with the operation of the Service or other users' access
  • Create multiple accounts for fraudulent purposes
  • Use automated tools to scrape or access the Service beyond normal use

9. Tax & Financial Calculation Disclaimer

Budget iT provides estimates of Canadian federal and provincial taxes, CPP contributions, and EI premiums based on publicly available CRA data. These calculations are for informational purposes only and do not constitute tax advice.

We are not a licensed tax preparer or financial advisor. Always consult a qualified tax professional or the Canada Revenue Agency for official tax filings. We are not liable for any discrepancies between our estimates and actual tax amounts.

Business features such as invoice totals, HST/GST remittance estimates, mileage deductions (based on CRA per-km rates), profit & loss summaries, and dashboard analytics are provided as organizational aids only and should be verified by a qualified accountant before use in any official filing.

10. Limitation of Liability

The Service is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Budget iT shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service.

This includes, but is not limited to, loss of data, loss of profits, or damages resulting from reliance on tax calculations provided by the Service.

11. Termination

You may delete your account at any time through the Settings page. We may also terminate or suspend your account if you violate these terms.

Upon termination, your encrypted data and all associated keys will be permanently deleted from our servers.

12. Governing Law

These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict of law principles.
